- Transportation Infrastructure and Active Transportation
Grand Junction’s climate, scenery, and natural resources encourage active outdoor lifestyles, and the City continues to improve its active transportation infrastructure in order to further support these lifestyles within City limits. The Public Works Department with the support of the Urban Trails Committee has successfully led efforts to expand safe and enjoyable bicycle and walking corridors throughout the city, including its 2020 bicycle route wayfinding effort, which installed 300 wayfinding markers to help cyclists navigate the City.
In addition, the Pedestrian & Bicycle Master Plan currently in its final phase of development in the Community Development department aims to increase opportunities for residents to use non-vehicle modes of travel in their daily routines, as well as for recreation. Creating opportunities for more members of the community to reach work, healthcare, shopping, and recreational destinations on foot or by alternative transportation like bikes, eBikes, scooters, or adaptive devices will improve community health. It will also reduce air pollution, noise, and congestion created by vehicle miles traveled while increasing work flexibility for those who are unable or do not choose to operate a motor vehicle.
With the same goal in mind, the City’s Shared Micromobility Pilot Program will launch in Summer 2023, offering community members access to non-vehicle modes of travel while also delivering a helpful set of data for the City to incorporate into its future active transportation planning.
