GJPD Warns Community of Ongoing Scam Targeting Residents

Police News Posted on May 24, 2024

The Grand Junction Police Department is alerting the community about an ongoing scam that has recently been reported by multiple residents. The scam involves a well-dressed male approaching elderly females in the parking lot of a store. The male tells the female one of the tires on her vehicle is flat. While the male distracts the female, another person is reaching into the vehicle and stealing their personal belongings. In all incidents, the victim’s credit cards were used immediately in nearby stores.

The Grand Junction Police Department urges residents to be vigilant and to follow these safety tips to protect themselves from falling victim to this scam:

1.    Be Cautious: Be wary of strangers, even if they appear friendly. It’s okay to be skeptical. If the scammer insists on showing you the tire, tell the scammer you will call for help and stay in your vehicle.

2.    Stay Aware: Always be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to those around you. Trust your gut. If something doesn’t feel normal, it probably isn’t.

3.     Don’t Give Thieves the Opportunity: Keep your doors locked, even while driving. Never leave your purse or wallet unattended. Thieves look for crimes of opportunity, so keep your belongings with you at all times.

4.    Report Suspicious Activity: Report any suspicious activity to the Grand Junction Police Department at 970-549-5000 or non-emergency dispatch at 970-242-6707.

The Grand Junction Police Department encourages anyone who has been a victim of a theft to file an online report or call 970-549-5000. In addition to taking personal precautions, community members are encouraged to share these safety tips with friends and family to help prevent thefts and keep the community safer.
