The Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) Community Resource Unit is working to clean up waste and debris in public areas and lands throughout the city. The City of Grand Junction has been working with Square U Away, a local cleanup and hauling company, to remove waste and debris. The work began on Dike Road and under the 5th Street bridge in August of this year. The city is currently working on clearing out the area on Railroad Island with plans to begin cleanup of the Las Colonias Park and Watson Island areas next. So far, the total amount of material collected by this effort is 4,920 Lbs. The City of Grand Junction Public Works Department has also coordinated cleanup efforts with volunteers in the area north of Broadway and east of Dike Road, collecting 736 cubic yards of material as of August.
When litter, drug paraphernalia, and biohazards build up, they can find their way into parks, waterways, and other areas. The waste can cause environmental damage, harm local wildlife, and pose threats to the community. The city and the GJPD Community Resource Unit offer prior notice of the cleanup to anyone they encounter who might be impacted. The city is also working closely with local partnering organizations including Catholic Outreach, Homeward Bound, Pathway Village, and the Joseph Center to offer referrals and information about local resources.
