GJPD Warns of Ongoing Bank Scam

Police News Posted on September 16, 2025

Grand Junction, CO - The Grand Junction Police Department is warning community members of an ongoing scam involving individuals posing as bank employees. Scammers are using fake computer pop-ups to deceive victims and then sending legitimate couriers to collect their money.

Here’s how it works: A fraudulent pop-up message appears on your computer screen, urging the victim to call a phone number. The scammer claims the victim’s bank account has been compromised. The victim is then instructed to withdraw cash and place it in an envelope. A courier service, unaware of the scam and simply hired to make a delivery, picks up the envelope and transports it, where it ultimately ends up in the hands of the criminals.

This is a SCAM. Banks and legitimate companies will never ask you to withdraw cash, hand it to a courier, or send money to “protect” your account.

What to do if you are targeted:

  • Disconnect immediately: Hang up the phone and shut down your computer.
  • Do not send money: Never withdraw or hand over cash.
  • Contact your bank: Call your bank right away and verify your account is safe.
  • Report it: File a report with the FTC (FTC.gov) and your local law enforcement.
  • Check your computer: If you gave remote access, run a security scan or have your device checked for malware/viruses.

The Grand Junction Police Department urges everyone to remain vigilant and share this information with family, friends, and neighbors.
