The Traffic Unit was originally established in 1998 with four dedicated motorcycle officers and a sergeant. By 2012, the unit had expanded to six motorcycle officers, two patrol vehicles, and a sergeant. However, due to department staffing levels, it was disbanded that same year.
In 2014, the unit was reestablished with just one motorcycle officer. Over time, it has grown significantly and now comprises three motorcycle officers, one patrol vehicle officer, and a sergeant.
These highly trained officers play a vital role in maintaining road safety. Beyond conducting traffic stops, they respond to crashes, assist with other calls for service, and handle complex crash investigations. Some investigations take months to complete as officers meticulously gather evidence, reconstruct events, and determine the causes of collisions. Their work goes far beyond writing citations directly contributes to safer roads and a more informed community.
